Looking for your next cycling adventure in Simcoe County? The Simcoe County Loop Trail offers a scenic and accessible ride that’s perfect for cyclists of all levels. A recent ride between Orillia and Coldwater highlights just how rewarding this trail can be.

Trail Connections with Deep Roots

The Loop Trail is a 160-kilometre multi-use route that connects nine municipalities and three major bodies of water: Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching, and Georgian Bay. It was developed by Tourism Simcoe County by linking together a network of former rail lines and waterfront trails, many of which are part of the Trans Canada Trail.

Much of the trail follows the paths of historic railways, like the North Simcoe Railway Line, built in 1878 to replace the old stagecoach route between Barrie and Penetanguishene 1. These corridors once carried timber, grain, and passengers—today, they carry cyclists, hikers, and nature lovers through forests, wetlands, and charming towns.

A Trail for Everyone

Starting in downtown Orillia, this 20-kilometre stretch of the Loop Trail is a gem. The route follows the Uhthoff Trail, a well-maintained gravel path that

winds through shaded forests, past wetlands, and alongside tranquil waterways. It’s mostly flat, making it ideal for casual riders, families, or anyone looking to enjoy a peaceful ride immersed in nature.

Scenic Stops and Small-Town Charm

As you pedal westward, the trail offers plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and soak in the natural beauty of Simcoe County. The journey culminates in Coldwater, a charming village where you can explore local shops, grab a bite, or visit the historic Coldwater Mill.

Whether you’re planning a half-day ride or looking to explore more of the 160-kilometre Loop Trail, this section is a fantastic place to start.
